Tricare Prime and Eye Exams

Active-duty spouses and children can get one eye examination per year. There is no copay required. Until recently, you had to wait at least 365 days between eye examinations. The rules were recently changed. Now you can be seen once per calender year. For example, you could have a complete eye examination December 31, 2010 and then be eligible again on January 1st, 2011.

If you wear contacts lenses, Tricare will cover the eye examination but you will be responsible for paying for the contact lenses evaluation. This means that Tricare will cover over half of the total fee.

Tricare can not be used for treatment of eye diseases or injuries unless you call your primary care provider in Fayetteville, NC in advance and get approval for being seen off-base by a Tricare provider.
